Abstract:

This one-hour webinar introduces schema therapy as a promising, transdiagnostic model for addressing the complex underlying factors in addictive disorders, such as maladaptive coping modes, developmental trauma, and personality disorders. Participants will learn how schema therapy integrates evidence-based techniques to help patients transform deeply ingrained belief systems and heal past relational wounds, potentially promoting sustained motivation for behavior change more effectively than cognitive-behavioral approaches alone.

The training will cover: The limitations of current addiction treatment approaches and the need for more comprehensive, empirically-validated models.

The key principles and techniques of schema therapy, including limited reparenting, chairwork, and imagery rescripting.

How schema therapy addresses complex mode cycles, early attachment trauma, and self-defeating patterns holistically.

The potential of schema therapy to improve long-term addiction recovery rates by treating the whole person developmentally.

Participants will gain a foundational understanding of schema therapy's promise for transforming addiction treatment and improving outcomes. The training will emphasize the importance of going beyond singular behavior change to meet patients' core emotional needs, fortify their healthy adult selves, and enhance distress tolerance without addictive numbing. Future research directions for demonstrating schema therapy's efficacy in addiction treatment will also be discussed.
